HULL UNIVERSITY AT THE UK CHALLENGE

Bridget Mustard, the Hull University Alumni Relations Officer informed us that the British Council jointly with UK Alumni Network invited all UK Universities Alumni in Malaysia to participate in the coming UK Challenge of a fun afternoon of trivia, pictures, music and general knowledge questions on 24 May 2008.

The committee of the alumni managed to put a team to represent Hull University, after trying our best to contact as many graduates who are available on that day to participate.

The team will be represented by: Rajes Patel, Hor Kam Peng, Primila Edward, Cheng Sim Fang, Sivanesan Nadarajah and Lesley Ng.

The UK Alumni Network (UKAN), a joint initiative by the British Council and the British High Commission, which was officially launched by HRH the Duke of York (Prince Andrew) in 2001, today has a membership in excess of 10,000. Its main objective is to keep UK graduates connected with one another via networking events, while remaining engaged with the UK.

Being a participant, representing Hull at this event was great fun. We each received a goodie bag from British Council; hi-tea was great too-delicious. The event organiser (First Ray) handled the 2+hours very well where everything is digital & hi-tech facilitated. There were 7 rounds, 14 teams where scores were tabulated after each round. Hull was in 2nd place after the 3rd round. There was also an individual's event where 2 of Hull team won 2nd Prize and another- a complimentary prize (Prizes for top 15 highest scores).
Final result: Hull is at joint 5th place with Birmingham, Aston, Coventry & Nottingham.

THE STAR EDUCATION SECTION: Grads fight it out
DECISIONS, decisions! That was the dilemma of the day for more than 80 graduates at the UK University Challenge Event held recently at Hotel Maya, Kuala Lumpur.
Organised by the British Council as part of the activities for the UK Alumni Network (Ukan), the challenge between UK alumni associations saw 14 teams of six members each, battling it out in general knowledge and trivia.

It was like a scene right out of a television game show when the teams, armed with electronic keyboards and eager smiles on their faces, used various strategies to try and score the highest points during the interactive multimedia quiz.
British High Commissioner Boyd McCleary also participated in the fun when he joined the team from Queen’s University Belfast to “fight it out” for his alma mater.

There were shouts of delight and excitement when the names of the winners were announced. The Ukan All-Stars team – comprising Surin Suksuwan (University of Leeds and University of Edinburgh), Chris Eng (University of Leeds and Cambridge University), Wong Soon Yew (University of Leeds), Ramzi Abdullah (Essex University and University of Reading), Kevin Tan (The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) and Adam Teo (University of Bradford) – took home the championship title.

“This event was organised to help UK graduates stay in touch with the British Council, the British High Commission, and their host study institutions,” said McCleary.
“We strongly believe that it is important to create a platform for UK grads to meet up and stay in touch with old friends as well as make new ones,” he told the participants.
“This is a great way to foster networking,” said British Council’s director of education and training Susana Galván See-Schierenberg.
“UK graduates are usually proud of their connection to the UK and their institutions.
“It's great to see how the different teams reflected this pride by competing with such enthusiasm. What is important is they had fun too,” she added.
